30+30 Ton Hydraulic Gantry System for Lifting a 45-Ton Pressure Vessel in Russia

MOTCRANE supplied a dual hydraulic gantry system consisting of two 30-ton telescopic gantries to a customer in Russia for lifting and moving an extra-long pressure vessel weighing approximately 45 tons.

Each gantry is equipped with a 12-meter main girder and two adjustable lifting trolleys, forming a four-point synchronized lifting arrangement. With a maximum lifting height of 7 meters, the system supports lifting, lowering, short-distance movement, positioning, and truck loading.

Description

Project Overview

Because of the vessel’s length and the uneven load distribution between its two ends, a single-point or simple two-point lifting method would not provide enough control. The project therefore used a four-point synchronized lifting arrangement. One hydraulic gantry was positioned at each end of the vessel, with the four adjustable lifting trolleys aligned with the lifting lugs designed into the pressure vessel.

The hydraulic gantry system can operate inside the workshop and can also be moved outdoors when required. Compared with installing a 60-ton overhead crane, it does not depend on the workshop building structure and can be relocated between workstations as production and installation schedules change.

Pressure Vessel Lifting Requirements

The customer manufactures extra-long pressure vessels weighing up to approximately 45 tons and measuring at least 8 meters in length. Since the center of gravity and the load at each end can vary, the four lifting points were confirmed during the vessel design stage.

The customer required the two hydraulic gantries to operate either independently or in synchronized mode. This allows one side or one lifting point to be adjusted before the complete system continues lifting together.

The main project requirements were:

  • System configuration: 2 × 30-ton hydraulic gantries
  • Combined rated capacity: 60 tons
  • Maximum load handled: approximately 45 tons
  • Main girder length: 12 meters per gantry
  • Maximum lifting height: 7 meters
  • Lifting arrangement: four adjustable lifting points
  • Control mode: independent and synchronized control
  • Working environment: indoor and outdoor
  • Main operations: lifting, lowering, short-distance movement, positioning, and truck loading
  • Project location: Russia

The equipment could not be selected by simply dividing the 45-ton load equally between the two gantries. MOTCRANE also reviewed the vessel’s center of gravity, lifting lug positions, end-load differences, travel route, and available operating space.

Dual Hydraulic Gantry System Solution

MOTCRANE designed the hydraulic gantry system for pressure vessel lifting according to the vessel weight, length, lifting-point arrangement, and site conditions.

During operation, the two gantries are positioned at opposite ends of the vessel. Four hydraulic lifting columns raise the load through the four lifting points. The remote control system displays the real-time height and load of each lifting column, allowing the operator to monitor the complete lifting process.

If a height or load difference appears, the operator can adjust one gantry or one lifting point independently. Once the vessel is level and the load is balanced, synchronized lifting can be used for the main lifting or lowering movement. This reduces the risk of vessel tilting, side loading, and uneven force on the structure.

The two lifting trolleys on each main girder can be moved laterally to match the actual lifting lug positions. After the pressure vessel reaches the required height, the lower traveling units allow the hydraulic gantry system to move slowly over a short distance. The vessel can then be transferred to an installation position, a truck-loading area, or the next production station.

Project Summary

The main challenge of this project was not simply providing 60 tons of combined lifting capacity. The two 30-ton hydraulic gantries had to work together around four lifting points while keeping a 45-ton extra-long pressure vessel level and stable.

For pressure vessel lifting, tank handling, transformer installation, and other heavy equipment moving projects, the final solution must consider more than total weight. Load dimensions, center of gravity, lifting-point distribution, lifting height, movement route, and available site space all affect the system design.

MOTCRANE can provide single-unit or multi-unit hydraulic gantry systems for synchronized lifting, precise positioning, short-distance movement, installation, and truck loading of large industrial equipment.
