Two 10-Ton Metallurgical Double-Girder Overhead Cranes Exported to Algeria

MOTCRANE supplied two QDY double-girder cranes for a new steel mill in Algeria. Each 10 ton metallurgical overhead crane was designed for scrap charging and molten-steel ladle handling in the electric furnace shop.

Each crane has a 24 m span, 10 m lifting height, A7 duty classification, and a single-hook open winch trolley. Both cranes were shipped in 2023 and installed in 2024 with guidance from a MOTCRANE engineer. They are now in operation.

説明

顧客要件

The customer needed two cranes for scrap charging and molten-steel ladle handling in the same workshop bay.

The ladles are lifted from both sides, with the combined weight of the ladle, molten steel, and lifting gear reaching approximately 6–8 tons. Because the cranes would handle molten steel, the selection had to account for hoisting safety, heat exposure, and operating conditions—not just rated capacity.

The customer specified a 10-ton single-hook configuration with cab operation. They also raised the possibility of requiring 20-ton lifting capacity in the future and wanted this considered during the initial design.

MOTCRANE ソリューション

MOTCRANE selected a QDY configuration for each 10 ton metallurgical overhead crane. Both double-girder overhead cranes were equipped with single-hook open winch trolleys.

Both cranes were designed for A7 duty, with a 24 m span and 10 m lifting height. The hoisting speed is 1–10 m/min, trolley travel speed 3–30 m/min, and crane travel speed 4–40 m/min.

Safety Features for Molten-Steel Handling

Each hoisting system was equipped with two independent service brakes and an additional drum safety brake.

Heat protection, overload limiting, hoisting limit switches, and emergency safeguards were also included. These measures were configured according to the applicable national standards for the project.

Travel Systems and Workshop Layout

Both cranes use German SEW drives for bridge and trolley travel. Each crane is operated from an air-conditioned cab, with a 380 V / 50 Hz power supply.

The two cranes share one workshop bay, running on P38 rails measuring 86 m on each side, for a total of 172 m.

MOTCRANE also supplied the rail installation accessories, conductor rails, and complete electrical control systems. The customer was responsible for bringing the external power supply to the crane connection point.

Planning for Future Lifting Capacity

Although both cranes were supplied with a rated capacity of 10 tons, the customer had discussed a possible future requirement for 20 tons.

MOTCRANE therefore allowed additional load capacity in the main girder design of both cranes to accommodate potential changes in production requirements.

This provision does not make either crane a 20-ton crane. Any future capacity increase would require new structural and wheel-load calculations, together with a review of the hoisting, travel, and safety systems.

Manufacturing, Testing & Delivery

The customer placed the order in 2023, and both cranes were manufactured and shipped to Algeria that year.

Factory inspections and no-load operating tests were completed before shipment. Full-load testing was arranged at the customer’s site after installation.

In 2024, MOTCRANE sent one engineer to Algeria to guide the customer’s installation team. Following installation, both cranes underwent on-site full-load testing and subsequently entered service at the steel mill.

Why Is Molten Steel Weight Alone Not Enough to Select a Ladle Crane?

When selecting a crane for ladle handling, you need to consider the complete suspended load—not just the molten steel. This includes the ladle itself, its contents, and all lifting gear.

In this project, the combined lifting load was approximately 6–8 tons, and the customer selected 10-ton metallurgical overhead cranes.

However, capacity alone is not enough. You also need to define the ladle lifting points, travel route, operating frequency, working environment, and safety requirements before deciding on the crane configuration.

If you are planning lifting equipment for an electric furnace shop or continuous casting area, share your ladle weight, workshop dimensions, and handling process with モトクレーン. We can help you evaluate the appropriate crane configuration for your operation.
